Summary, etc.	Durante muchos años se utilizaron métodos de cálculo basados en las tensiones admisibles, las que se obtenían dividiendo la tensión de falla de cada material por un coeficiente de seguridad o de minoración. Por ejemplo, en el caso del Acero se utilizaba y se utiliza a la Tensión de fluencia como tensión de falla. Así, en función de las propiedades mecánicas y las características intrínsecas de cada material variaban los coeficientes de seguridad, que eran siempre los mismos, no tomaban en cuenta la incidencia provocada por los diversos tipos de carga ni el comportamiento de los materiales ante las distintas solicitaciones. En cambio, los métodos actuales se basan en el Manual LRFD (Load and Resistance Factor Design - Diseño por factores de Resistencia y de Carga) publicado por el Instituto americano de construcción en Acero (AISC). ¿En qué consiste? En lugar de minorar las tensiones de falla para obtener las admisibles, se trabaja directamente sobre los Estados Límites de resistencia, sin minorar, pero en cambio se mayoran las cargas actuantes mediante FACTORES DE CARGA Y DE RESISTENCIA que varían en función del tipo de carga y de solicitaciones. Por ese motivo los coeficientes de seguridad para las cargas accidentales superan a los utilizados para las cargas permanentes.
